Howard's Weekly Message

Rev. Howard Hintzman-The Weekly Message

October 6, 2009

I had a fearful yet amazing experience last week.  I, who sometimes never go near a grocery store some weeks, except to get milk (and then usually to  Walgreens) went to County Market on Wednesday or Thursday, for the fourth time,  getting items for the trustee’s supper at our house on Thursday night.  When I got there, I wasn’t sure I had enough courage to face the onslaught of senior adults.  This was much earlier in the morning than I usually go to the store and so I figured this must be senior citizen day or just what happens early in the morning at grocery stores.   I mean, the place was just swarming with “these” people, and remember I can say “these” people because an authority greater than I, Perkins Restaurant proclaims that I am a senior adult at 55 according to their senior menu.   I think every senior adult in Point was there.  I guess this was my initiation rite into this world of privilege called senior citizens.  I learned later from the check-out person it had nothing to do with seniors per se but rather was a one day sale.  Oh, that’s right, I did go back one more time that day for something I forgot (again!) and while there did pick up some more of the “one day” sale items.   Maybe once I practice this a couple of times, it will not be so intimidating – none of them seemed fazed by it at all. Always something new to experience and enjoy.   I am glad God created “these senior adults” to be smart shoppers and the spirited folk they are.

Till next week…H
