Howard's Weekly Message

Rev. Howard Hintzman-The Weekly Message

January 12, 2010

I said I would tell you San Diego stories sparingly, so here’s one.

On our way back to Minneapolis, the young woman sitting in the aisle seat of our row was a native of San Diego.  She was or is in the military having spent time in the Mideast – not many crazier spots to be.   She was flying to Wisconsin to see her boyfriend.  She was absolutely beside herself – seeing the parents, experiencing winter and all that goes with that. We tried to be careful of the horror stories of winter in Wisconsin, especially when we found out she was going to a town which began with the letter “h”.   After a guessing game of towns starting with “h” we hit the jackpot - Hayward.   She did have a winter coat, something people in San Diego have - seems weird and she was wearing a very flimsy pair of canvas shoes.  When it was time to get off the plane, we usually wait till the tangled mess of people and luggage are pretty well off, we showed signs of getting off too and she took off, thinking we were right behind her.   When she saw we weren’t, she immediately stepped in another row of seats and waited for us.  We finally got off and into the airport and she followed us like a puppy.   She was just scared silly – which seemed funny when you think she had spent time in the Mideast.  We went to find her luggage and her boyfriend – and then he appeared and we handed her off to him.  It really was cute and gave us a fun giggle.  Later we heard that Hayward had set a record low of -25; she must have  fled Wisconsin with a vow never to return.   It was fun caring for someone, knowing how someone has cared for us in the past.  Thank God for the privilege we had of caring.

Till next week…H

P.S.  The final touches are being put on the church roof today – God is good.
